    Stops

    1. McGreer (front)

McGreer Hall, our oldest building on campus, was built in 1846. Since it was Bishop's first structure, this meant it needed to house classrooms, the residences, the library and cafeteria. Today, McGreer is home to all administrative functions.

    2. St. Mark's Chapel

St. Mark’s Chapel is located on the campus of Bishop’s University. This historic chapel was consecrated in 1857 by George Jehoshaphat Mountain, the third Anglican Bishop of Quebec.

With funds collected by Jasper Hume Nicolls, the first Principal of the university, made it possible in 1874 to extend the original nave to the south and to add an apse. Fire destroyed the interior of the chapel in 1891 and the restoration work was completed in 1895.

Carefully maintained and beautifully preserved, St. Mark’s Chapel was declared Cultural Property by the Quebec Ministère des affaires culturelles in 1989. It remains today as an important historical and artistic legacy of the long and significant role of Bishop’s University in the Eastern Townships region. St. Mark’s Chapel is now an ecumenical chapel serving the Bishop’s University and Champlain College Community.

For hours and events, consult the Chapel's website.

    3. Bishop Williams Hall

Bishop Williams Hall, better known as BWH, is Bishop’s largest class room with a seating capacity of 130. It is also fully equipped with audio, video, and lap top connections for every seat.

It was originally built in 1891 and rebuilt in 1892 after being destroyed by a fire.
    4. Principal's House

Harrold Drive is where the Principal and some professors have their homes. There is a good chance that you will be invited to the Principal's home for a reception and to a professor's home for a potluck dinner at least once during your time at Bishop's.

Every year during Orientation Week, students come and sing the school song to the Principal on his front lawn.

Find out more about Principal Michael Goldbloom here.

    5. Coulter Field

Coulter Field is home to the Gaiters football, lacrosse and rugby and soccer teams.

Our teams are highly competitive and they have the fans to match. Our fans are known to be some of the most passionate on the Canadian sports scene without exception. The cheers from Gaiter fans fill our students athletes with energy and pride every time they don their purple jerseys.

      The "Gaiters" Story

In 1947, a competition was sponsored by the Committee on Athletics and The Campus Newspaper to find a nickname for the University Football team, which would fire up the enthusiasm of the fans. The contest was won by George B. McClintock '49 who originally suggested "Gators" after the alligator which is a "tough and formidable foe when aroused, capable of swift and decisive action in an emergency". However, by using a play on words, the name spelled "Gaiters" seemed more appropriate for an Anglican College. Gaiters were an article of ecclesiastical clothing, which covered part of the wearer's shoe and lower legs. These were worn by Bishops, Deans and Archdeacons as part of the clerical dress when not robed.
