Homestead, a white clapboard house located in the center of campus, has quite a history. Some of the School’s first students were housed here; an early photograph shows the headmaster and students reading beside one of two seven-foot fireplaces. Among Homestead’s original features is a small door on the stairs that leads to a passage around the chimney, lending credence to stories that Homestead was a station on the Underground Railroad. Homestead has been a student dormitory since 1936.
