      1. Shadscale (Atriplex confertifolia)

        A Great Basin plant with rounded, low-growing habit, Shadscale is the shrub to try where nothing else will grow. Grey-green foliage on spine-tipped branches form fruits of salmon or pink on female plants in the fall. Shadscale is very xeric: additional irrigation after establishment will predispose it to disease or death.
