This cultivar of limber pine is not like those found in our mountains. 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid' displays a tight, upright, cone-shaped habit that is altogether different from the limber pine you might run across at the top of some rocky ridge. In nature, this species is slow-growing and competes poorly with other trees. As a result, it is found on inhospitable sites, groomed by wind, rock and snow into non-conformist shapes. Limber pine needles grow in bundles of five. The tree is so named because young branches can literally be tied into a knot. (Please don't try it with our tree!)
