      1. Purple Smokebush (Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple')

Latin Name - Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple'
        Height - 12-15 feet
        Spread - 12-15 feet
        Growth Rate - Moderate
        USDA Zone - 5 to 8
        Drought Tolerance - High

This dramatic large shrub/small tree is becoming increasingly popular. The smooth, oval, purple-red leaves emerge late in the spring. Billowy hairs from flower stalks provide the "smoke" (the actual flowers are insignificant). This plant's floral display lasts for most of the summer. A combination of drought tolerance, useful size and low maintenance combine to make this a very desirable landscape plant.
