This small tree produces magnificent goblet-shaped flowers of purple-pink in early spring. The flowers emerge from big fuzzy buds and may be four or five inches across. Because this magnolia flowers early in the season, it’s wise to plant it in locations that don’t warm up too quickly and provide some protection from wind and widely fluctuating temperatures. The north side of a wall or building is an ideal spot. It is not uncommon to see an occasional flower in summer.
