This is one of the most widely planted pine trees in America. It is popular for its adaptability to varying soils and conditions, grows quickly compared to other pines and has long, beautiful needles. It looks much like a ponderosa pine but has smaller cones, needles in twos rather than threes and mature bark that is dark brown or near black rather than red. Austrian pine performs better than ponderosa in irrigated landscapes.
