    1. Octagon

The Octagon, located just west of College Row, is one of the most unusual and distinctive buildings on campus. Built in 1848, it sits on the former site of the Amherst Village Church. Built as an observatory and scientific gallery, the Octagon now holds classrooms, meeting rooms, and the Black Student Union's Gerald Penny 1977 Memorial Cultural Center.
