    1. Johnson Chapel

Dedicated in 1827, Johnson Chapel is one of the three oldest buildings on campus, and arguably the most iconic. “JChap,” as it’s known, is where previous generations of students used to gather for religious services every week, and where each class still gathers for Convocation when they arrive as first-year students and Senior Assembly just before they graduate. Decorated with portraits of College presidents and other important figures in Amherst history, the chapel also hosts major guest speakers (such as Rachel Maddow, Bob Woodward and Sonia Sotomayor, to give recent examples), comedians, a cappella groups, Vespers and Baccalaureate services, and the annual student Lip Sync competition. In addition to the chapel itself, the building houses the offices and classrooms of the English department and the Film and Media Studies program. And check out the legendary “Ulysses bathroom”: a restroom on the floor whose walls are covered with text from James Joyce’s masterwork, thanks to a group of student pranksters from 1978.
