The Vassar College Art Library is located in Van Ingen Hall, between the Art Department in Taylor Hall (above Main Gate) and the Thompson Memorial Library. Built in 1937, the interior is a rare example of a complete modernist interior from the pre-World War II period in the United States. The foundation of the Art Library’s collection was a library of over 1,000 volumes on art and architecture purchased by Matthew Vassar for the college from Elias Lyman Magoon, an art collector and early trustee of the college. Today, the Art Library contains an extensive reference collection, over 200 print periodicals, and a wide range of electronic scholarly resources.
