Course TitleScarcely Similar: Post-colonial Economic Conditions in Singapore and Myanmar
Course ThemesThe purpose of this GIX is to explore the influence of colonialism on the economic and political development in Singapore and Myanmar. Since independence from Britain in the mid-1900s, each of these countries has experienced a distinct and divergent development trajectory. Now, Singapore has one of the world’s highest GDP per capita and ranks #1 in the Ease of Doing Business report. Myanmar, on the other hand, has a GDP per capita of only $1,212 and is still undergoing a political transition from military rule to democracy. These countries offer a range of learning opportunities from how to stimulate economic growth and manage transformation, to the impact of leadership in both the public and private sectors.
This GIX will focus on each country’s historical antecedents giving rise to the economic, political, and social structures and the key local and global forces that are likely to affect the future development of Singapore and Myanmar.
