Installed in the grass of Bryan Plaza adjacent to the entrance of the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center is Jim Love’s original and iconic Jack. Modeled after a traditional child’s toy of the same name, Jack bears a likeness to its subject in its material, form and playfulness. However, Love turned what is usually a small toy into a monumental sculpture many times its original size and added a coat of vibrant red paint to the typically unfinished surface. In this location, Jack embodies the high energy intrinsic to the recreation center, while providing a unique juxtaposition to Aurora Robson’s detailed constellation of suspended sculptures that occupy the building’s foyer.
