History: The cornerstone for Hawkins Hall was laid during Commencement week in 1940. Renovated in 1994, the building is named after university benefactor Gen. Rush Hawkins. Born in Pomfret, Vt., Hawkins served as a Union Army colonel during the Civil War, raising and leading the 9th New York Infantry. A lawyer and an avid book collector, Hawkins received honorary degrees from Brown University and the University of Vermont. Also named an officer in the Legion of Honor of France, Hawkins left $350,000 to Norwich University upon his death in 1920.
