In April 1919, the Board of Trustees authorized construction of a Centennial Stairway to improve and dignify the approach to the university. Each step carries the name of a distinguished Norwich official, alumnus or past cadet. Rooks are not permitted to use the Centennial Stairway until they are recognized as freshmen cadets.
