Middlebury’s social houses give students of all walks of life an opportunity to live together in an inclusive community setting with frequent house gatherings, social events, and group meals. While many members live in these houses, membership can extend across campus to those in other dorms as well.

Brackett House is home to Tavern, one of these social houses. Tavern has a community service focus and attracts all types of Middlebury students. “Most of us don’t have anything in common,” says Emily Ballou ’21. “But we love volunteering and hanging out on the weekend. I’ve made my closest friends living in Tavern.” Brackett is one of the four Ridgeline houses, a group of buildings that sit in a ring on the western side of campus alongside West Cemetery and the undeveloped Vermont woods.

While 30 students live in the 22 singles and four doubles in the building, many Tavern members live elsewhere. Members make use of the massive lounge, which often hosts house meetings; an upstairs lounge that is frequently used for group homework sessions; and a large basement that hosts many of the social events and parties. There is also an in-building laundry and a full kitchen.
