Many buildings at Middlebury are named after the donor who made construction possible, and in some ways Forest Hall is not much different. But instead of who raised the funds, it is named after what raised the funds.

To pay for this 1936 dorm building, built to accommodate the growing number of students, especially female students, the College sold off a portion of Battell Forest—donated to Middlebury by Joseph Battell—to the federal government. It would eventually become a piece of the Green Mountain National Forest.

The building houses students in singles, doubles, and sink-mate pairs, and also has various kitchens, a large laundry room, Islamic prayer room, and darkroom for photography.
