      1. Painter Hall

Painter Hall, with its many chimneys, has inspired the look of many buildings on campus, but its origins are far humbler than its impact. To save money, the College built the hall out of donated materials, like lumber and marble, including a donated headstone whose inscription can be read over a basement window.

The building, finished in 1816 and named after one of the College’s founders, Gamaliel Painter, is the oldest on campus and has at various times contained classrooms, a gymnasium, a library, and a reading room. It is one of the three buildings that make up Old Stone Row, along with Old Chapel and Starr Hall, which, collectively, are part of the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places.

Today it houses upperclassmen in 35 singles and 11 doubles. The building also has laundry facilities, storage, and a bike room.
