InSite offers two students a unique opportunity to live, for a full year, in the house Middlebury’s Solar Decathlon Team entered into the national Solar Decathlon competition in 2013. The competition challenges college students to create sustainable and high-quality housing that mitigates climate change.
InSite placed eighth overall in the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, and third in the communications and affordability contests. The project took two years of student design, planning, and building before competition. Afterward, the team shipped InSite back to campus and the College made it into student housing.
The house utilizes sustainable features like reclaimed wood, a powerful solar system, and a green roof that sequesters carbon and controls run off. Students who live in InSite are expected to give tours of the house and are even given a budget to host events promoting the house.
