Ice hockey has a long history at Middlebury. In 1922–1923, Paris Fletcher ’24 and a few friends built the first outdoor on-campus boarded rink, and started the College’s first intercollegiate team. Since then, Middlebury’s ice has been home to eight men’s National Championships and five women’s National Championships.

Today, hockey games are a favorite activity for students and community members who pack into the 2,600 seats of Chip Kenyon Arena. The facility also has a concessions area, press box, and room for several hundred standing-room viewers.

The ice is also frequently used for intramural sports and free skating. In the off season, when there is no ice, the arena is used for concerts, student activities, and as an indoor workout area.
