On a cold winter day, or after the sun has gone down on an evening of studying, it is common to see a variety of Middlebury students, in shorts and shirts, running, jogging, stretching, lounging, and chatting within the massive expanse of the Virtue Field House.

Beneath the vaulted ceiling, walled by large windows, bright lights shine down on the 110,000-square-foot space, larger than a football field. Many will first notice the 200-meter New Balance Foundation Track, with its nine 60-meter sprint lanes, often used for NCAA-sanctioned indoor track meets, including the 2016 women’s and 2018 men’s New England Indoor Championships. Around the lanes you’ll notice long-jump pits, pole-vault and high-jump mats, and throwing platforms.

Inside the track, students run and jump about on the 21,000-square-foot McCormick Field turf. Teams of all disciplines use the spongy surface, as do intramural groups and groups of friends who come down to compete, relax, or just kick around a soccer ball in January.

The facility has seating for more than 800 spectators on concrete bleachers that are often used for team workouts as well, and a cardio balcony with over 30 pieces of exercise equipment overlooks the track.

The cutting-edge facility is a highlight of the athletics complex, LEED Gold certified, and used by almost all students in some way.
