        The massive, wooden, curved arches of the Nelson Recreation Center often see students practicing, playing, and competing beneath them, but in its previous life, as a World War II Navy surplus recreation center, it saw soldiers preparing for the war effort.

        The College bought the building for just one dollar and started using it as an athletic facility as College attendance increased in the post-World War II years.

        Today, it is a multiuse space with a surface lined for volleyball, basketball, badminton, and tennis. The space also is home to Middlebury’s climbing wall, a popular spot for students of all abilities.
