Some students use the cemetery that stretches from the athletics complex to the Proctor tennis courts as a shortcut; others avoid its gates and weathered headstones entirely. But for those looking for a moment of solitude, it offers quiet corners for respite and reflection.

The cemetery’s first burials occurred in 1793 and it is the resting place of many of Middlebury College’s founders, including Gamaliel Painter, Seth Storrs, and Horatio Seymour.

Oddly enough, though, the oldest resident is Prince Amun-Her-Khepesh-Ef, a two-year-old Egyptian prince who died in 1883 B.C.E. Local resident Henry Sheldon, of the Sheldon Museum, brought the mummy to Vermont, but its eventual degradation necessitated its burial.
