  1. TOUR CSUB

    We invite you to take a stroll around our lively campus and be a Roadrunner for the day!

    Stops

    1. Icardo Center

      • This building was dedicated in honor of longtime Roadrunner boosters who donated more than 2.5 million dollars to support Runner athletics. 
      • CSUB has one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the nation. 
      • We are Division I in all sports
      • Students get in free to all CSUB games at the Icardo Center and Rabobank Arena with school I.D. 
      • Sports that we offer include: Men’s - Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, Diving, Track & Field, & Wrestling. Women’s - Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Diving, Track & Field, Beach Volleyball, Volleyball.
      • Cheerleading tryouts are held every spring for the following school year.
      • Behind the Icardo the Hilman Aquatic Center is available for student use from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. daily.
      • Stephen Neal is a CSUB alumnus that won the 1998 and 1999 NCAA heavyweight wrestling championship. He is now a professional football player and won the 2005 Super Bowl. Other notable alumni include Tito Ortiz (UFC fighter) and Kebu Stewart (NBA basketball  player). 
    2. Health Center/Counseling Center

      Stop in front of the Health Center and mention the following:

      • The Health Center provides basic health and preventive services to the students of CSUB. 
      • All students currently enrolled in classes are eligible for care. 
      • There is no co-pay for students. 
      • There is also an on-campus pharmacy located inside the Health Center. 
      • Hours of operation: Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Students may make an appointment or walk-in to see a physician. 
      • The Counseling Center is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at CSUB. 
      • Staff provide individual counseling to students with personal, academic, and career concerns. 
      • Students may schedule appointments once per week. 
      • The Center also provides general studies courses, such as how to cope with stress, parenting, time management, and grief. 
    3. University Police Station

      Stop in front of the UPD station and mention the following:

      • Fully functioning Police station on campus that patrol the campus 24/7
      • They offer free bike registration, and will provide a free bike lock
      • The also hire paid position for students
      • If you are ever on campus and your car battery dies they offer cable service
      • Students can Police escorts to anywhere on campus.
      • They offer many training and information sessions over the year for staff and students (active short, self defense..)
      • They also serve as the main lost and found location on-campus
    4. Student Recreation Center

      Walk inside the Student Recreation Center, stand in the lobby and mention the following: 

      • The new Student Recreation Center opened April 30th, 2009. The 75,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility has something for every student. 
      • 13,000 square foot fitness area equipped with 60 cardiovascular machines including treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, exercise bikes, climbers, and rowing ergometers; free weight benches, barbells, dumbbells, weight equipment & resistance weight machines, core strength area, stretching area, and 24 LCD big screen televisions. 
      • Seven exercise rooms with specialized hardwood flooring, mirrors, padding, and sound system for a variety of classes such as aerobics, martial arts, cardio boxing, and yoga. 
      • Dedicated room for Personal Trainer services and assessment. 
      • 3-court gymnasium, (two hardwood courts and one resilient rubber floor) for informal and intramural basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer, and floor hockey. 
      • Indoor 32-foot high climbing wall with separate bouldering rock. 
      • Indoor 3-lane suspended 1/10th of a mile jogging/walking track. 
      • Lighted outdoor sports field for informal, intramural, and student club activities like soccer, flag football, ultimate, and softball. 
      • Daily use of lockers and showers are available

      You will then ask the front desk if you can walk your tour on the tile around the rock wall. Make sure to tell your tour to stay on the tile and to stay off any equipment. Make sure to stop and point out the basketball gym, the rock wall, group x rooms, and anything that is displayed in the glass cases on the wall.

    5. Student Union

      You will take them through the SU while stopping and pointing things out.

      • The Runner Bookstore, Rowdy’s, and Student Lounge are only a few of the valuable resources that are housed in the Student Union.
      •  The Office of Student Activities, and Student Resource Center are also located here. 
      • The Student Union is also a wireless hotspot for students with laptops and other wireless technology. 
      • Point out Starbucks and Panda Express and mention other food options on campus.
      • If possible, take students to the Runner Bookstore. Once you leave the Student Union, and walk past Runner Park mention the following: Campus Fraternities and Sororities host Greek Week activities in Runner Park during the spring semester.
      • Club fairs also take place in Runner Park periodically throughout the school year. 
      • The Student Union is also in the process of expansion. Future developments include a large event space, conference, gaming, study rooms, and additional seating.
    6. Student Housing East (SHE)

      • If a sample room is available feel free to take your group to the room. Otherwise, stop in front of the commons and mention the following: 
      • The Office of Residential Life operates 2 four-story co-ed residence halls, that accommodate 250 students per hall (East). 
      • The halls are co-ed with separate suites and bathroom facilities. 
      • Rooms are single (if occupancy allows), double, or super double occupancy. 
      • The rooms are fully carpeted and furnished with beds, desks, chairs, bookcases, chest of drawers, closets, individual air conditioning and heating units, basic cable television, and internet access. 
      • The cost averages about $8,800 for the academic year (fall and spring semesters). 
      • Delicious meals at the Cafe are included in the fees. The student can choose between two meal options. 
      •  Other residential housing amenities include: laundry facility, computer lab, and study rooms. 

       

      Make sure to mention Student Housing West and the following information:

      • SHW is only open to upper division, graduate, and non-traditional students.
      • There are four different building options which offer single room types only.
      • Each building has a community assistant that serves as a resource and provide community support.

    7. Runner Cafe

      Standing in front of the Café mention the following:

      • The Runner Café is the main eatery on campus and serves a variety of food for students
      • Upon paying an entry fee students have access to an all you care to eat buffet style eatery on campus.
      • The Runner Café is also a wireless internet hotspot on campus. 
      • If possible, tell students about the Honors Program while you are at the Runner Café, and mention the following: The Hawk Honors Lounge is also housed within the Runner Café. The Hawk Honors program is a curriculum for high achieving students.

       

      Mention the CSUB Food Pantry and the following information:

      • The food pantry provides healthy and sustainable food for students, staff, and faculty. It operates on a point system.
    8. Walter W. Stiern Library

      If you have a family or a small group, feel free to step inside the library and show them around. However, if you have a large group, please DO NOT take them inside! 

      •  The library was named after Walter Stiern, a state senator for 28 years. He authorized many bills, including the bill that funded CSUB in 1960. 
      • The Walter W. Stiern Library is the largest single structure on the CSUB campus. 
      • The 150,000 square-foot building houses nearly half a million volumes and provides electronic access to more than 30,000 periodical titles via its hundreds of computer terminals. 
      • The lower level of the library contains five computing facilities, four of which contain computer stations for classroom use; the fifth is an open access lab for students. 
      • There are also three instructional television studios (ITV) on the lower level that broadcast classes to CSUB's entire service region. 
      • Other features include the media center, audio, video, and photography labs. 
      • The top 4 floors contain books, computer terminals, 14 study rooms, and 44 faculty offices. 
      • The general public may obtain a borrower's card to check out books for a fee that can be renewed yearly.
    9. Dorothy Donahoe Hall

      Feel free to bring students inside DDH, but remind them to keep their voices down if class is in session, and mention the following: 

      • Dorothy Donahoe Hall is at the heart of the CSUB campus. 
      • Dorothy Donahoe was a civic leader and assembly women for the State of California. Her bill helped expand the CSU system as well as create funding for the Bakersfield campus. 
      • DDH is comprised of many classrooms as well as a handful of departments like the Graduate Student Center
      • DDH is also a wireless internet hotspot on campus. 
      • Walk slowly by the boards and allow students to view the variety of clubs offered. 
      • The walls of the Galleria inside of DDH are made up of boards that are decorated by carious clubs, organizations, and departments affiliated with the campus. 
      • There are over 90 clubs and organizations on campus. The diverse variety of clubs on campus cater to many students. There are clubs for specific majors, cultural appreciation, honor societies, sports and recreation, as well as fraternities and sororities. 
      • Our campus is continually growing. If there is not a club for a specific interest, students are encouraged to start one of their own with help from the Student Activities office on campus! 
    10. Doré Theatre / Todd Magidan Gallery

      Due to time constraints you may not have enough time to walk over to the Doré or the gallery, so you can point to both buildings from a distance and mention the following: 

      • The theatre is named after Frances B. Doré, a patron who donated one-fourth of a family trust as a lasting gift to the California State Bakersfield Foundation to be used for the construction of new buildings on campus. 
      • The Doré Theatre has showcased a number of professional acts through the Dorian Society Encounters with the Arts series and is the home for three student productions each year.
      • The CSUB music department also uses the Doré to host a variety of musical programs. 
      • The theatre has allowed the campus and our community to embrace many rich cultures through the fine arts. A variety of other events such as lectures, orientations, and convocations are also held at the Doré. 

       

      • Todd Madigan was one of eleven donors that made the Todd Madigan Art Gallery a reality. 
      • The gallery is attached to the Doré theatre and has hosted many art shows.
      • The gallery features exhibits of both traditional and contemporary artworks that enrich and expand the students' artistic experiences, as well as the community at large. 
      • Previous Todd Madigan Gallery exhibits have featured the works of Henri Matisse, John Alton, Cezanne, Goya, Rembrandt, 11 Titian, Mary Kelley, and many more.
    11. Arts and Humanities Building / Visual Preforming Arts Building

      You will only visit these buildings if they are requested. You must mention the buildings and some of the following information after discussing the Doré and the gallery:

      • A&H Student Center has 3 full-time advisors who provide advising, tutoring, and outreach services.
      •  Houses the Dean’s office and most of the arts and humanities departments.
      • The visual arts center provides 12,000 square feet of new art labs for fine arts students, and includes a ceramics studio, sculpture studio, drawing/design studio, digital arts and print-making studio.
    12. Student Services Area

       You may walk through the student service area, or you can point to it and mention the following:

      • This area is well visited by students. The Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Financial Services, and the Cashiers office are all conveniently located in this area. 
      • Mention each office and their function briefly

      SFS & Cashiers

      -       Students pay for their parking permit, purchase a bus pass, pay their tuition, apply for a payment plan, purchase CSUB sponsored event tickets and many more functions.

    13. Paul F. Romberg Nursing Center

      Stop in front of the building and mention the following: ​

      • The Paul F. Romberg Nursing Center was the first building ever constructed in the state college/university system without state funding. ​
      • The building includes a large lecture room, intensive care unit, seminar rooms, faculty offices, and a multipurpose room. ​
      • As of 2007, CSUB has opened a new Nursing Simulation Facility on campus which features two life like mannequins to provide students with hands-on experience before they enter the field. ​
      • The Nursing program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. ​
      • Due to the popularity of the major, entry to the Nursing program is highly competitive. Students must complete 13 prerequisites with a grade of "C" or better, though they can apply to the program with prerequisites in progress. ​
      • Nursing is the only impacted major on campus. The Department of Nursing receives about 250 applications each year for the 40 seats available twice a year. Average GPA for the program is 3.59. ​
      • The department offers RN, BSN, and MSN programs as well as school health services, credentials, and family nurse practitioner certification.
    14. Science I, II, & III

      If time allows feel free to bring students inside Science I to show them the "Head Room" and Science II to showcase the geology and butterfly displays. Feel free to take them down the first-floor hallway of Science III and remind them that classes may be in session. Please mention the following: 

      • The Science Buildings host the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, and Mathematics Departments. 
      • Pre-Vet and Pre-Med advisors can be contacted through the Science Departments. 
      • Science II has a Geology Study Center with a research lab. 
      •  CSUB is host to the only public university petroleum geology program west of the Rockies. 
      • Science III stands three stories high with state-of-the-art computer labs and classrooms, a resource library, student lounge, and Which Wich Sandwich Shop. 
      • The Mathematics and Computer Science departments are also located in Science III. 
      • Budding astronomers are encouraged to visit the on-campus observatory housing in our science department.
    15. Business Development Center

      Feel free to walk through the court yard, find a stopping point and mention the following:

      •  BPA student center is the main hub for all BPA students to get advising and tutoring, it is also a place where they can study and hang out.
      • President’s office is also located in the Business Development Center.

      *Mention the Orange trees that bloom in the winter time located in the in the courtyard.

    16. Fabrication Lab (FAB LAB)

      Stand in front of the Fab Lab and mention the following:

      • The Fab Lab is a digital fabrication lab open to students and the public
      • Has a variety of machines such as laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and 3D printers.
      • Offers monthly training sessions and workshops that are free for students.
