  1. Admissions Tour

    This is an Admissions Tour.

    Stops

    1. Main School Building

      The MSB houses history classrooms as well as many of Deerfield’s administrative offices, including: Head of School, Admission, Dean of Faculty, Student Life Office, Student Activities, Inclusion & Community Life, Community Service, Human Resources and Finance.

      D-Tails: The Caswell Library, located on the first floor, serves as the Admission waiting area. Mr. Boyden’s maxim, “Look up to the hills,” is inscribed above the fireplace.

    2. Arms Building

      The Arms Building’s nine classrooms serve the English and Philosophy & Religion departments.
    3. Kendall Classroom Building

      The Kendall’s many classrooms are home to the Language department.

      D-Tails:
      The Day Student lounge is located on the bottom floor. 
    4. Hess Center for the Arts

      The Art Department’s programs are based in the Hess Center for the Arts, with facilities for visual and performing arts alike. The Hess Center for the Arts houses: The Hess Auditorium, The von Auersperg Gallery, The Reid Black Box Theater, The Elizabeth Wachsman Concert Hall, an acting lab, a modernized recording studio and various art spaces. Numerous exhibitions and performances take place in the Hess Center each year, drawing enthusiastic audiences and providing showcases for individual talents as well as group efforts. Exhibitions provide recognition for promising young artists and photographers, while actors, technicians, dancers, and musicians showcase their talents in the performing arts spaces.

      D-Tails:
      School Meetings take place in the Large Auditorium every Wednesday, and the gathering kicks off with The School Fight Song followed by each graduating class’ cheer.
    5. Boyden Library

      The Boyden Library provides research help and instruction, comfortable spaces for individual or group study, an Innovation Lab, and a rich collection of books and other materials. The Library houses administrative offices including: College Advising, Center for Service and Global Citizenship, Academic Dean, Registrar, and Academy Archives.

      D-Tails:
      There is an underground tunnel connecting the Library to the Koch Center for Math, Science and Technology.  Students often take advantage of this welcome option during chilly winter days.
    6. Koch Center

      The Koch Center is an 80,000 square-foot center for the study of science, mathematics, and technology. The building includes: A planetarium, 20 classrooms, laboratory spaces, dedicated space for independent research, Information Technology and Communications Offices, a 225-seat auditorium, an astronomy viewing terrace, a central atrium and a cafe where students and faculty can gather.

      D-Tails:
      An absolute must order at the Lewis café: The Grilled Chocolate Chip Muffin.  Known as the Grilled CC, this a fan favorite among Deerfield students.
    7. The Door

      Located on the front of the John Williams Dormitory, the Deerfield Door is the primary symbol of the Academy. Its architectural design represents part of the Pocumtuck Valley's heritage as well as the Academy’s historical tradition.

      D-Tails: Deerfield has no mascot, but it does have symbols, and the three most important are the Door, the Seal, and the shades of Deerfield green...GO BIG GREEN!

    8. John Williams and John Louis Dorms

      D-Tails: Deerfield Academy was founded in 1797.
    9. Athletics Complex PT 1

      The Academy Seal is a more formal symbol, which includes a detailed image of the Deerfield Door, the phrase “Founded 1797,” and the school’s motto: "Be Worthy of Your Heritage." A bronze version of the seal can be found on the floor of the main entrance to the Athletic Center.

      D-Tails: A long-standing Deerfield tradition holds that it is bad luck to step on the Seal.

      D-Tails: The Kravis Gym is also home to some seriously competitive and costume-filled dodge ball tournaments.
    10. Athletics Complex PT 2

      A new Athletics Complex opened in Fall of 2018 with a state-of-the-art hockey rink, puck-shooting room, golf simulator, rowing tanks, updated locker rooms, synthetic turf field house, elevated running track, multi-purpose events pavilion, and group exercise rooms.

      D-Tails: In 2017, the entire school community added their signatures to a main steel support beam that is now hidden within the walls of the field house. 
    11. Athletics Complex PT 3

      The original building includes the Greer Store, locker rooms, gymnasiums, the Natatorium, Kravis Room, Dewey Squash Center, Fitness Center, the Athletics Store and athletics administrative offices.

      D-Tails: The squash courts are home to the first dance of the year.

      D-Tails: The Boys and Girls Water Polo teams generously offer swim lessons to all interested Deerfield community members.
    12. Greer Store

      The east wing of the Athletic Complex houses the ever-popular student snack bar, the Greer Store. “The Greer” is the campus’ central snack bar and hangout. With a wide menu and extended hours, it’s the place to go to see friends, watch TV, or just chill.

      D-Tails: There's free popcorn in the Greer 24/7!
    13. Dining Hall

      The Academy believes that sit-down meals provide an important opportunity for enhancing the community. Boarding students attend all sit-down meals. Day students attend all sit-down lunches and are encouraged to stay for the evening meal.

      D-Tails:
       Each birthday is celebrated during sit down meals with a song!
    14. Rosenwald-Shumway

      Both halves of Rosenwald-Shumway were completed and opened in 1989. It is a girls’ dorm.
