    Stops

    1. EWU Center

EWU started in 1882, as the Benjamin P Cheney Academy to about 200 students. The Cheney Academy would later go on to become the State Normal School in Cheney (1889) and then in 1937 it became a fully accredited four-year degree granting institution –Eastern Washington College of Education. Finally in 1977, the state legislature changed the school’s name to Eastern Washington University.

EWU has been in Spokane since the 80s--some programs and offices were in a building called the Spokane Center, while other classes and programs were offered here. This building was officially named the EWU Center in 2016.

About 2200-2300 EWU students take classes on the Spokane campus in programs like:
      • Accounting
      • Addiction Studies
      • Business
      • Communication Sciences & Disorders
      • Creative Writing
      • Dental Hygiene
      • Finance
      • Health Services Administration
      • Occupational Therapy
      • Marketing
      • Physical Therapy
      • Public Administration
      • Public Health
      • Urban and Regional Planning
      • Social Work
Students are usually juniors, seniors or graduate students.
    2. Student Support Center

The Student Support Center is our one stop shop for student services. Students can do everything from connecting with an academic advisor, getting feed back on a resume, honing their writing skills and developing their leadership in a student organization to name a few.  Students needing additional support can also access confidential counseling services here.

The Student Support Center is a great place to start for any questions.  For students who live in Spokane or only take classes in Spokane, it's a really convenient way to access resources.
    3. College of Business

The EWU Center is home to the College of Business.  Our programs are AACSB accredited and prepare students to become successful professionals.  Some examples of projects our students have worked on include: collecting market research for the University District, developing strategic plans for programs/businesses in the area and contributing to data analysis on Homelessness. Our Center for Entrepreneurship encourages interdisciplinary efforts and has spawned creativity and innovation.  Each year, students pitch their business plans in the hopes of winning prize money.  Our evening class schedules provide students the flexibility to obtain work experience in internships and employment.  In addition, the College of Business hosts an annual leadership series and facilitates a number of events to encourage professional networking!
    4. Fitness Center - Health Education Research Building

Students at the Spokane campus enjoy 24/7 access to the Spokane Fitness Center.  Located in the Health Education Research Building, the Fitness Center offers a variety of cardio machines, resistance machines and free weights.

One student commented, "I love the fitness center. I think almost everyone would agree that money is really tight, when you are a student, so no one wants to pay for a gym membership. Also it is really convenient with location so it doesn’t take extra time to drive to a gym; you can just go after class. Working out helps me relax and sleep better throughout the night. I would go crazy if I couldn’t workout."
    5. Academic Center

This is the Academic Center.  It was third building built on this campus.  We share the campus with Washington State University and the Academic Center serves as their main administration building.

One of the things that makes this a unique campus is that we share the space—this allows for the opportunity to collaborate.  For the health professions, there are a number of interprofessional opportunities—speakers, competitions and classes.

The Campus Library is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of this building.  Because we are a shared campus, students doing research in the library have access to both the electronic resources of both EWU and WSU!

As a fun fact, if you go to the 2nd floor of the library, we take learning to a whole new level.  Students can study and get their steps in on our walking treadmill!

This building houses two large lecture auditoriums (seating 100-200 people), as well as several smaller classrooms (24-60), and a number of conference rooms.

    6. Health Sciences Building

Dedicated in 2002, the Health Science Building is home to two community clinics, University Hearing and Speech Clinic and the Dental Hygiene Clinic, and the EWU programs of: Communication Sciences and Disorders (joint program with WSU Speech and Hearing), Dental Hygiene, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (collaborative program with UW), and some WSU Pharmacology programs.

The two clinics are on the main floor of this building. On the upper floors, you'll find faculty research labs as well as teaching labs for physical therapy and occupational therapy. What's great about this building is that it provides space for students to learn in traditional classrooms, but also provides access to labs where students can practice what they've learned. It's not unusual for classes to go between lecture and lab within one class period. In one of the classrooms upstairs, you'll even find a practice dental chair!
    7. Dental Hygiene

Our dental hygiene program operates its own dental hygiene clinicit's a self-support, non-profit facility where students provide quality care with direct supervision from faculty. It's also one of only 3 safety net dental clinics in Spokane, treating 6,000 uninsured, underinsured, and homeless.
    8. University Hearing and Speech Clinic

EWU's Communication Sciences and Disorder (CMSD) program offers a unique experience for students interested in pursuing a career in speech language pathology.  The program is a collaborative program with Washington State University allowing students to benefit from the expertise and resources of both universities.

Graduate students in the program gain hands-on experience at the University Hearing and Speech Clinic located on site. The Clinic provides screenings, evaluations, and rehabilitation for a broad range of communication problems for Spokane area patients.

Outside the classroom, students participate in a number of service activities ranging from promoting literacy at local schools to informing the community about the importance of helmet safety.
    9. Campus Lawn

This is the campus lawn where you can not only see most of campus, but where we hold a number of activities when the weather is nice.  Some events have included: Spring concerts, Resource Fairs, RecFest, Campus Trunk or Treating, etc.  When it’s nice out, you might also catch students relaxing with a game of lawn volleyball or spike ball.

Fun fact: Despite our downtown location, the Campus Lawn has seen geese, squirrels, marmots and even a deer or two! Can you spot the marmot in the third picture?

    10. University Gateway Bridge

Completed in 2018, the University District Gateway Bridge connects the Spokane campus with the location of the new Catalyst building.
    11. Catalyst Building

Construction is currently underway at the site for the new Catalyst Building.  The Catalyst Building will be Spokane's first net zero energy building.  Owned by Avista Development, EWU will serve as the primary tenent in the building offer major coursework in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Visual Communication Design.  The 159,000 square-foot hub looks to be an innovation hub for the Spokane community.  Catalyst is scheduled to open in Fall 2020.
