Student Stores Building, formerly known as Daniels Students Stores Building, had the Daniels name removed in 2020 by the Board of Trustees. The Commission on History, Race, and a Way Forward recommended Daniels' name be removed from honor based on the following information:

        • Daniels shaped strategy for the Democratic Party's white supremacy campaigns of 1898 and 1900.
        • He positioned the News & Observer as the propoganda arm of the party and used political cartoons and sensationalist reporting to demonize black voters and politicians as a threat to whites.
        • As secretary of the Navy, he promoted Jim Crow segregation in the federal bureaucracy and racial subjugation in the U.S.-occupied Haiti
        • He opposed President Truman's Committee on Civil Rights and its call for an end to Jim Crow segregation.
