Vance Hall is named for Zebulon Baird Vance, who was a prominent North Carolina governor and U.S. Senator.

The Commission on History, Race, and a Way Forward recommended in a April 2021 resolution to the Chancellor that Vance's name be removed from honor based on the following:

        • Vance enslaved black men, women, and children.
        • He committed treason against the United States by his service as an officer of the Confederate army.
        • As North Carolina's two-term Civil war governor, he used his positions of influence to perpetuate and sustain systems of racial oppression - first, slavery, and then the regime of Jim Crow.
        • He espoused white supremacist principles throughout his political career and lifetime.
