Morrison Residence Hall is named for Cameron A. Morrison, a North Carolina governor, U.S. Senator and congressman. Not a college graduate himself, Morrison was an energetic supporter of higher education and an influential trustee. The university made him an honorary member of the class of 1898 and gave him an honorary degree in 1922.
The Commission on History, Race, and a Way Forward recommended in an April 2021 resolution the the Chancellor that Morrison's name be removed from honor based on the following information:
- Morrison organized and led vigilantes called Red Shirts in the 1898 white supremacy campaign.
- He staked his 1920 gubernatorial campaign on his credentials as an unrepentant white supremacist.
- He opposed Black claims on equal rights until the end of his life.
