The Carolina Campus Community Garden (CCCG) is a program of the North Carolina Botanical Garden 
and aims to grow vegetables and fruit so that all UNC employees have access to fresh, sustainably grown produce through the shared efforts of staff, students, faculty, and local residents and to serve as a learning community for developing gardening skills, healthy living, social responsibility, and interdisciplinary academic pursuits.
The garden contains a greenhouse equipped with both photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal panels. The PV powers the fan to regulate the greenhouse temperature, pumps the solar-heated water, and powers an external outlet, enabling the greenhouse to grow fruits and vegetables all year long.

Garden Details
- Year Built: 2010
- Size: 1/3 of an acre
- Workdays: Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., year-round
- Recipients: All three shifts of UNC housekeepers
- Volunteers: Students, staff, faculty and community members
- Compost: Bring your veggie and fruit scraps (but no meat, dairy or fats) to the garden 24/7. There is always a bin outside the garden fence for these food scraps.
- Special Features: Beehives, solar-powered greenhouse, extensive compost system and shiitake mushroom logs
- Benefits: Give back to UNC, stress reliever, learn to garden, fresh air, exercise, make new friends and community well-being

Workday Details
- Experience required: No prior gardening experience is required.
- What to bring: Water, and wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty.
- Parking: Free and available across the street from the garden on Wilson St. on work days
- Who can participate: Individuals or groups, but groups should contact Claire Lorch at clorch@email.unc.edu to reserve a date
- Age: Must be 16 years old or accompanied by a parent or guardian.
- Community Service Leave: Employees can get paid for volunteering in the garden with their supervisor’s approval.
DID YOU KNOW? Fun Facts About Carolina Campus Community Garden:
- We distribute about 5,000 pounds of sustainably grown produce to UNC’s housekeepers annually.
- Although we grow mostly vegetables, we also grow grapes, strawberries, figs and persimmons.
- Thanks to all of the donated food scraps from students, staff and local community members, we produce all of the compost we need for the entire garden.
- We offer workshops on soil, spring gardening, bees and other topics.
- We do not use any synthetic chemical fertilizers or insecticides.
