    1. Speyside Boats - Alicia (Allie) VanBenschoten (2019)

      Wang Center Staff Pick
We stopped in the town of Speyside for lunch and much-needed break from our day excursion of driving around the entire island. Due, to most of us being bus from the very windy roads of Tobago we initially did not take the time to fully admire the town. This photo was taken after lunch while we waited for our bus to be emptied of fire ants. Having the fire ant delay gave us time to admire the beauty of the town. Speyside is one of the many fisherman towns of Tobago in the background you can see a glass bottom boat; Which is often used for boat tours.

This library is a pleasant surprise to many visitors as it is located right in one of the largest underground malls in the world. As soon as you step into this library, you are surrounded by tall shelves of books that reach all the way up the ceiling. This is as close to heaven on earth for bookworms, but if not, the view is still guaranteed to take your breath away.

    3. Sanssouci Palace Front Garden - Brice Wilbanks (2019)

2nd Place - Scenes from Around the World
While visiting the city of Potsdam, near Berlin, we had the opportunity to see the summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The palace was built between 1745 and 1747 with hints of traditional baroque architecture. The surrounding area is known now as the Park Sanssouci and features 700 acres of beautiful baroque style buildings, vibrant gardens and stunning terraces. Most of the architecture was symmetrical surrounding the palace. The stairs accent directly to the back door of the palace and the terraces on each palace mirror each other. This was one of the most architecturally remarkable buildings that I encountered on my study away experience.

Taken after the group had climbed up and down many dunes to get to this one, this photo captures the serenity of what is otherwise considered a harsh and dangerous place for life. It depicts just how small a person is next to the background of large sand dunes that stretch for miles, constantly in a state of change and flux.

    5. Feast - Sora Gallo (2019)

      1st Place - People & Culture
I was grateful for the opportunity to visit my Chinese roommate's house in the countryside and celebrate her sister's and father's birthday with the whole family. I studied away through CIEE in Nanjing, China, and the program was structured so that each US student was paired with a Chinese native roommate for the semester. Her family lived in Hubei Province, close to Jiangsu Province (where Nanjing University was located). As in most traditional Chinese households during a celebration, the women cooked a banquet of delicious foods while their husbands played mahjong, smoked, and drank baijiu (China's signature alcohol). One of my favorite parts of visiting was hearing her family speak; they have a special dialect that only people in Xianning speak, and according to my roommate, it is an ancient dialect. I've showed many Chinese people from other areas a clip of my roommate speaking in her dialect, and none of them understood her even though they share a common dialect of standard Mandarin. This demonstrates a complexity and diversity in the Chinese language that English does not seem to have.

This photo was taken at a miniature horse conservation farm where they are trying to repopulate miniature horses. This man spoke very little English, however, we bonded over our shared love of the two horses in the picture. Some of my classmates and I spend well over an hour petting these horses and feeding them grass we found on the ground. I felt particularly intrigued by this man because the story within his eyes, yet I had to accept that I would never know his story because of the language barrier.

    7. Pre-primary learners in a mobile school - Kelsey Goering (2019)

      3rd Place - People & Culture
In rural areas of Namibia, children attend mobile schools where they are often learning in an environment with little to no resources and under-qualified teachers. Despite this, students and teachers still do the best they can to make the most of their circumstances. This picture was taken at Okarukoro Primary School, which is a mobile school in the rural area of Opuwo, Namibia. Here, school had been in session for more than 2 weeks and still the students had no notebooks, pencils, pens, and some classes did not even have teachers. This particular pre-primary classroom depicted in this picture had no notebooks or anything to write with, but the teacher still managed to find ways to keep them learning by having them point to and name their body parts in their home language.

    8. Jewish Life/Holocaust Week - Jess Alley (2019)

      1st Place - Global Classroom
Among the busy streets and bustling city of Berlin is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. This counter-monument contains 2,711 concrete blocks scattered upon a piece of land, strategically placed to force people to encounter it throughout their day. Upon entrance, each corner brings about a new experience and sensation to us all. Each step creates a distortion of reality. Slowly, blocks get bigger, engulfing us deeper inside the memorial. This is not just a counter monument but a global classroom for the international community. We all are confronted with a reality that is rooted in our history and must understand the international responsibility we have to continue the fight for human rights and genocide prevention.

      3rd Place - Global Classroom
Tobago is a very relational culture, and when I mentioned that I wanted to go bird watching, our driver already knew someone to set us up with. He did not fail us, as the man leading us that day (and in this photo) was an incredible guide, and not just regarding birds, as he also possesses a wealth of knowledge about the other flora and fauna of the rainforest and was happy to share. Although I could not have been more excited about the ecology of the area, what struck me the most was learning about the ways the local culture interacts with the rainforest and all the beings in it. This photo shows us nearing the end of our 5k jungle hike, emerging from the jungle having heard many incredible stories about the animals, plants and people of this area and how they all fit together.

    11. Sacred History and Myth - Katie McGregor (2019)

      1st Place - Lutes Away
Our class took a day trip to Cape Sounion to visit the Temple of Poseidon and watch the sun set over the Aegean Sea. Sounion, known as one of the best sunset spots in Greece, is on the Southern most tip of the Attic Peninsula and offers expansive views of the ocean. The feature of the Sounion, however, is the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon which are rich with history and myth. This temple is the location of some major archeological finds including: two archaic colossal kouroi statues, sculpted panels from the temple itself, a fine relief tablet of a victorious athlete, and more. The Sounion cliffs are also considered to be the place where King Aegeus ended his life due to his dismay upon believing that his son, Theseus, was not successful in killing the minotaur of Crete. The sea thereafter was called the Aegean. On top of all of this, Sounion is mentioned in The Odyssey when Homer describes Sounion as the “sacred” place where Phrontis died and was buried. Later in time, the Sounion was crucial to controlling ships entering the Saronic gulf. In the photo, Erin Hobbs is taking in the site of the Temple of Poseidon as the sunlight illuminates the columns.

    12. Sunset In Athens - Joey Grabowski (2019)

      2nd Place - Lutes Away
In the middle of Athens, Greece there is a mountain with a view that extends over the entire city and then some. While sitting on a rock wall while watching the sunset, I took a picture of my shoes that have the PLU rose window. This was only a part of the many adventures we had been on while studying away. Throughout my religion class we talked a lot about sacred spaces. For me, Mt. Lycabettus in Athens was a phenomenological sacred space. This type of space stems from the individuals connection with the location. I stood on top of that mountain and I was able to see the Aegean, other mountains, the Acropolis, and so much more because there wasn't even a cloud in the sky! The amount of beauty I saw before me made me feel some type of energy was connected to the place. I think the place is unique and I wanted to capture it to remember what caused such warm feelings.

This photo was taken by me during a weekly chess-game I would have with Ravi at Tianguis Open Air Market in Oaxaca City. Ravi and his son owned a little tienda at the market that sold hand-made leather bracelets and dreamcatchers. The dad (pictured) also did custom henna tattoos. I introduced myself to him and was interested in his chess board. Him and I began to talk and play, and continued to do so for the remaining two months of my time in Oaxaca. I took this image on our second day of travel to Holden Village, after a day of travel by bus from PLU to Chelan. This was one of my favorite images from my time at Holden Village because it still evokes the sense of adventure and curiosity that I felt on that crisp winter day. Lute's Choice Winner
This is the street I lived on while studying away in Denmark. It was actually a spooky story because this was the morning my cat back home had died, but my parents hadn't told me yet. I woke up with a weird feeling so I went for a walk to clear my head and relax. I was interrupted from my thoughts by a soft “meow” and turned my head to meet eyes with a cat perched on top of a car in the sun. He stared at me for a bit and I kind of just knew that my Junie was gone. I have no way to explain that feeling but I just knew. This cat and I hung out for a few hours and he let me take many pictures of him. This was my favorite shot, both of that day and of the entire summer because of its composition, colors, and emotional connections to the comfort this cat provided me, and a documentation of the street I lived on during the best months of my life. This picture will always hold a very special place in my heart, as will that cat, and the city of Copenhagen.

    18. The Flow of Hanoi - Margaret Chell (2018)

3rd Place - Scenes from Around the World
Traffic in Hanoi was a constant source of conversation and awe. Coming from the US, I had to adjust to new norms of street crossing and find a sense of security when riding with new drivers. I was in awe at the way vehicles seemed to weave through each other without pause, and the calmness that existed even through all of the congestion. I used a longer exposure time to capture the constant motion that characterized the streets, but even stillness can be found at this busy intersection.

      2nd Place - People & Culture
During a warm January night in Wanaka, NZ a group of PLU students went to take pictures of That Wanaka Tree. That Wanaka Tree is the official name of the tree in this picture and is considered to be one of the most photogenic trees on the South Island. While I was prepared to take pictures of the tree, I was not prepared for the pianist. He had rolled out his piano on wheels right to the water’s edge and was playing music the whole time we were there. Despite other people being there, his playing transported you to a place of calmness and peace and it made you just want to stand there and listen.

    22. Learning While Tramping - Bailey Plumb (2018)

      1st Place - Global Classroom
This photo was taken on the first multiple day backpack that our group went on while in New Zealand. Most of us had never done more than day hikes so nobody knew what to expect. We hiked alongside 70-year-old Kiwis that were constantly exuding knowledge of their country. Every day on the trails we would learn multiple facts about the country, our classmates and ourselves as well. I don't think that there is a better way to learn about yourself than challenging your mind and body. And there is definitely no better way to understand New Zealand other than tramping its trails. During this hike on the Banks Peninsula Track, I realized that I made the best decision of my life by going on the study away. Even more so, I came to the realization that I was with an outstanding group of people that would make the month of January one that I could never forget.

    32. "Are You Enjoying Tobago?" - Michele Matthew

3rd Place - Scenes from Around the World

After our class arrived in the capital of Tobago, we split up into groups to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the city. As we explored the city, we familiarized ourselves with the city. We found out where to get groceries, identify important buildings and places and meet some of the local people. On our way back from the scavenger hunt to our guesthouse, I managed to capture a photo of the city that would become our home for the month. Back in the States, people are always trying to capture the “essence” of the city, the night lights, the tall skyscrapers, the traffic, and crowds of people. Overall, the generalized appearance of a major city should look like. Originally, I had just taken this photo because the landscape of the industrialization was interesting to me and I admire architecture. This photo has since become a representation of what a developing country could look like. Tobago is a developing country with street lights, electrical lines, paved roads and sidewalks, multi story buildings, and so, so much more. There is a stereotype that developing countries lack resources, that they do not have the resources that you will find in this image. The people of Trinidad and Tobago have pride in their culture, their history, and their land. But there is pride to be found in their development, in their improvements as well because they want to be and will be so much more than a developing country, a travel destination for vacation, or a place in need of salvation because they are beyond capable. They will always ask: "are you enjoying Tobago?" not only for tourism but because there is so much to enjoy.

Sadly, homelessness is a huge part of the English culture that surprised me given how frigid and unkind the weather is. The other huge part of England’s culture is its musical heritage, especially prominent in Liverpool, being the birthplace of The Beatles. In Liverpool we visited the statue for Eleanor Rigby from the Beatles’s song and it is dedicated to “All the lonely people”. The homeless man sleeping next to it broke my heart it was so devastatingly poetic.

The oldest child, the young girl with the dark hair in a pony tail was the only one who could understand a bit of english. She mentioned that she knew three languages already, including her native language, german, and english. There were at least five other children who are not pictures, as well as their mother and older siblings as well. Brooke Johnson, pictured playing with them, was happy to join in the fun and the children welcomed her with open arms. As we were leaving we were trailed by a chorus of "goodbye's" and we were once again on our way. This was a eye opening moment, because this family had traveled a long way to safety, and to be out and about playing, without a care in the world, was incredible. It was a joy to see them all in their element. All of the kids were as curious about us as we were about them. This is one of the reasons why people should study away, because moments like this do not come around often. Moments like the one pictured are priceless.

    37. Monumental Reflection - Anna Jensen (2017)

      2nd Place - Global Classroom
The first time we saw the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was during the first full day we had in DC. We had spent much of the day touring the city and visiting the famous monuments. Perhaps one of the most famous memorials in the city, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, lives up to its reputation. One picture cannot convey the emotion that this memorial evokes. From afar, we could sense the sheer number of names on the wall but it wasn't until we got up close that we could begin to notice each name one by one. As I read a handful of names one at a time, I could begin to imagine the family and friends who were close to each person. It then became obvious that thousands upon thousands of people were touched by the Vietnam War. Decisions about war are made in Washington, DC and it was in that moment that I realized the we were living and learning in a city that has had and continues to have such a vast impact on both the country and the world.

    38. Aboard the HMS Warrior - Courtney Olsen

      3rd Place - Global Classroom
For centuries, Portsmouth has been one of England's most significant naval ports. Today it is home to a historic dockyard that houses ships including the HMS Victory, the ship captained by Admiral Horatio Nelson in the Battle of Trafalgar. Our program took a tour of ships such as the HMS Victory and this one, the HMS Warrior, as part of a class surveying British history during the age of revolution and reform in the late 18th and 19th centuries. In this photo, a group of students looks out over the Portsmouth Harbor from the deck of the HMS Warrior.

This photo was taken in Santa Ana Zegache in Oaxaca, Mexico. Shown in the picture is the church of Santa Ana Zegache, named “Iglesia de Santa Ana Zegache,” and it is the main church in the small indigenous community. Our art class, consisting of two PLU students, went to visit this church as a part of our History of Oaxaca art class because of the intricate detail and the brilliant colors. The members of the indigenous community were in the process of restoring the church. They had repainted the church and were working on the altars on the inside.

We came, we saw, we loved. Standing atop of the ledge, we had the most incredible view of the entire city of Rome, from the Colosseum to the Altare della Patria. That day we wandered through the cobble stone streets eating our favorite gelato, excited for all the new things we might encounter. In just a few short weeks, this once unfamiliar place became our second home, €”we felt like a part of this great city.

3rd Place - Scenes from Around the World
The red-footed booby is found almost exclusively on Genovesa Island in the Galápagos, to the northeast of the rest of the archipelago. Boobies raise a single chick at any given time, and breed all year round. This breeding strategy, as well as the vulnerable placement of the nest in a low bush, is effective only because there are no native land-dwelling predators in the Galápagos. The parent is protective of its young, but shows little fear of me. This species, and its evolutionary adaptation to its ecological niche, will long outlast any threat I could possibly pose.

On el día de los muertos my host mom invited me to her family’s celebration at the gravesite of her parents. 2nd Place - Global Classroom
On the last full day of our trip a group of us decided to wake up early and snowshoe up a trail to see the village from a distance. Outdoor activities are a large part of the culture at Holden so we wanted to be sure we experienced a meaningful one. As we sat in the snow waiting for the sun to rise, we noticed a beam of constant light shining. It was a work light that stays on 24/7. This light reminded us of the topics we discussed in class including the conflict Holden faces because of their required interaction with a company that is tasked with cleaning up the old mine pollution. The main conflict stems from the fact that one of Holden's core values is being environmentally friendly and yet the company has no incentive to complete their work in such a manner.

    52. Taking it all in - Anna Jessen (2016)

      3rd Place - Global Classroom
This photo is taken at one of the more successful wineries in the region. We visited this winery to learn about the wine making process, the economics behind the wine industry, and how the weather can influence the wine making process. The wine industry in Italy is so large and important that the government classifies wine into different categories. Wines with more prestigious categories are seen as more special and tend to have higher prices because they are more sought after. Many people have a hard time deciphering between wines in different categories but will still justify paying more for the higher distinction. This region of Italy has received very little snowfall this year which will have an impact on the harvest. It was also interesting to compare this winery to one we visited in Cinque Terre because the geography is so different. Geography plays a large role in how grapes are grown and harvested which ultimately influences things like supply and price.

    55. Peyton Takes the Cheetah for a Walk - Charles Bergman

      3rd Place - Lutes Away
For ten days our J-term course lived on the grounds of the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC), where every day we volunteered to care for, and learn from, the animals for whom this place was home.  UWEC is a cross between a wildlife refuge or sanctuary, and a zoo.  All of the animals there are creatures from Uganda, like the cheetah in this photo.  They were often orphans, like this young cheetah, whose parents had been killed by hunters.  Every day, we cleaned cages, supplied food, and generally cared for the animals.  More than that, we had amazing interactions with the creatures of UWEC:  elephants, some 50 abandoned chimpanzees, two enormous and impressive rhinos, African grey parrots, even a very friendly giraffe.  We learned first had from these animals about the increasingly imperiled circumstances of wildlife in Africa.  Here, Peyton Schimdt-Teague is taking one of the two young cheetahs at UWEC for its daily walk.  Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on earth, and need exercise.  Notice that they are walking outside the enclosures, on one of the roads through UWEC, and a zookeeper keeps a watchful eye on things.  Through such close interactions, we gained an intimate knowledge of them as living creatures—their emotions, their intelligences, even personalities.  We learned that each of these animals is a unique individual, and we grew very attached to these incredible African creatures.
