      1. Welcome to the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences

The Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences offers a PhD, MD/PhD, Master’s in Biomedical Informatics, and Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). As a Vilcek student within the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, you will conduct innovative research in our state-of-the-art laboratories and medical facilities in the heart of midtown Manhattan.

Our PhD program is an open program composed of six broad areas that are categorized into focused training tracks. Our flexible curriculum and training allow you to explore any of these training areas before choosing a research focus and laboratory. The six broad areas and training tracks under each category are: Genes, Cells, & Organisms (Cell Biology, Developmental Genetics, Stem Cell Biology); Mechanisms of Disease (Molecular Oncology and Tumor Immunology, Molecular Pharmacology); Microbiology, Immunology, & Infectious Disease (Immunology and Inflammation, Microbiology); Neuroscience & Physiology (Molecular, Cellular, and Translational Neuroscience, Systems, Cognitive, and Computational Neuroscience); Quantitative Biology (Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Biomedical Imaging and Technology, Systems and Computational Biomedicine); and Data, Medicine, & Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Population Health). You can choose to work with over 250 training faculty, most of whom are affiliated with several training tracks, making our program flexible and multi-disciplinary.

Students enrolled in PhD training programs at NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences are eligible to apply for subsidized NYU Langone housing.
Housing for couples and families are available. Read more about our housing policy for couples and families. We provide safe and comfortable living environments for all students, including those whose gender identities differ from the sexes assigned to them at birth.

      2. Medical Science Building

The Medical Science Building, also within the “Superblock” has laboratories from the Departments of Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Medicine, Neurosurgery, Pathology, Pediatrics and Radiology spread across five floors. The ground floor houses a library with ample study space for individual and group settings and private rooms that can be reserved for small meetings or study groups. The Vilcek administrative office, as well as several core facilities and shared resources, are also located here. Flanked by the Joan & Joel Smilow Research Center (Smilow) and Tisch Hospital, it is a central hub of the Superblock and the location for monthly Vilcek dinners!

      3. Science Building

NYU Langone's Science Building encompasses ten floors of laboratory space dedicated to research. The building's design serves to integrate research facilities (wet lab space, core facilities, vivarium, conference spaces, etc.) so that investigators, students, faculty, and clinicians can conveniently collaborate. The building is home to NYU Langone's Institute for Computational MedicineInstitute for Systems Genetics, and our Neuroscience Institute

With its ground-floor café, spacious lobby, conference halls, and shared equipment and communal meeting and dining spaces on each of the research floors, students and faculty are able to mingle and chat about their science! The lobby and café open onto an outdoor courtyard, while second-floor garden terraces add to the campus' network of green spaces.

      4. Joan & Joel Smilow Research Center

The Joan and Joel Smilow Research Center (Smilow) at NYU Langone offers 13 floors dedicated to basic science, clinical, and translational research in cancer biology, pathology, dermatology, radiation oncology, and biochemistry, among other fields. The building features large, open-plan research lab spaces and multiple meeting rooms.

      5. Skirball Institute of Bimolecular Medicine

NYU Langone’s Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine is home to research laboratories performing fundamental research, such as structural biology and developmental genetics, which can then be applied to other translational disciplines. Floors above the labs are designated for residential housing for medical students, house staff, and postdoctoral fellows in Lipton Hall.

      6. Alexandria Center for Life Science

NYU Langone has more than 150,000 square feet of research facilities at the Alexandria Center for Life Science dedicated to biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, and molecular pharmacology research programs. The towers are conveniently located within close proximity to other major NYU Langone research facilities and features resources that include core laboratories, a vivarium, an Animal Biosafety Level 3 facility, conference rooms, and research support services. Various pharma companies are also housed within these towers, promoting collaboration between Langone labs and industry. There is also a gym in Alexandria West that can be used by lab members that work in the buildings.

      7. Population Health Building
