      1. Kimmel Pavilion

Cardiothoracic surgery trainees spend the majority of their time training at the Kimmel Pavilion, which is home to the adult cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, congenital cardiac surgery, and structural heart disease services. Trainees on the adult cardiac surgery service assist in traditional and minimally invasive valve procedures (dual console robotics, mini thoracotomy, mini sternotomy), coronary artery bypass grafting, thoracic vascular procedures (including ascending and thoracoabdominal aortic procedures), and heart failure procedures (VAD placements, ECMO cannulations). While on the thoracic surgery service, trainees participate in all kinds of VATS, robotic, and open thoracic surgical procedures including lung resections, tracheobronchial procedures, pleural decortications, esophagectomies, and advanced navigational bronchoscopy. During their time on the structural heart disease service, trainees participate in both surgical and transcatheter valve procedures including TAVRs, mitral clips, TMVRs, and TEVARs. Coverage of heart and lung transplant cases is the shared responsibility of all services depending on scheduling. All cardiothoracic surgery procedures take place on the fifth floor of the Kimmel Pavilion in dedicated robotic, hybrid, and traditional operating rooms. The cardiothoracic surgery intensive care and acute care units are on the 13th and 14th floor of this building and are staffed by a large group of in-house advanced practice providers and intensivists. Also, Kimmel Pavilion provides some of the most beautiful views of New York City during morning rounds.

      2. Hassenfeld Children's Hospital

Cardiothoracic surgery trainees spend six months rotating on the congenital cardiac surgery service during their training. While on this service, trainees first assist with the surgical treatment of a variety of congenital cardiac malformations. Trainees also assist in caring for patients in the newly-formed Pediatric Heart Failure and Transplant Program as part of this rotation. A robust team of advanced practice providers and intensivists provides the majority of the day-to-day care of these patients.

      3. NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue

At least six months of the cardiothoracic surgery training program is spent at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, which is the only facility in the NYC Health + Hospitals system that performs cardiac surgery. In addition to cardiac surgery, a busy thoracic surgery service performs open, VATS, and dual-console robotic procedures. Given that Bellevue is the safety net hospital for New York City’s underserved and marginalized population, patients often present in advanced stages of disease not usually seen today. A team of experienced advanced practice providers assists in caring for the uniquely diverse patient population at this busy public hospital.

      4. NYSIM Center

Cardiothoracic surgery trainees attend a series of monthly wet labs throughout the year where specific cardiothoracic surgical procedures are taught and performed on pig hearts. Hands-on sessions with ECMO circuits and TAVR simulators are also held.

      5. VA NY Harbor Healthcare System

Junior cardiothoracic surgery trainees spend three to six months at the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, where both cardiac and thoracic procedures are performed. This location is the primary VA referral center for cardiothoracic surgery for downstate New York, most of New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania. The smaller size of the service affords junior trainees the opportunity to learn about the management of cardiothoracic diseases both in and out of the operating room.

      6. Perlmutter Cancer Center

As part of the thoracic surgery rotation, trainees typically attend office hours at Perlmutter Cancer Center to learn about the pre- and postoperative care of the thoracic surgery patient.
