Cardiothoracic surgery trainees spend the majority of their time training at the Kimmel Pavilion, which is home to the adult cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, congenital cardiac surgery, and structural heart disease services. Trainees on the adult cardiac surgery service assist in traditional and minimally invasive valve procedures (dual console robotics, mini thoracotomy, mini sternotomy), coronary artery bypass grafting, thoracic vascular procedures (including ascending and thoracoabdominal aortic procedures), and heart failure procedures (VAD placements, ECMO cannulations). While on the thoracic surgery service, trainees participate in all kinds of VATS, robotic, and open thoracic surgical procedures including lung resections, tracheobronchial procedures, pleural decortications, esophagectomies, and advanced navigational bronchoscopy. During their time on the structural heart disease service, trainees participate in both surgical and transcatheter valve procedures including TAVRs, mitral clips, TMVRs, and TEVARs. Coverage of heart and lung transplant cases is the shared responsibility of all services depending on scheduling. All cardiothoracic surgery procedures take place on the fifth floor of the Kimmel Pavilion in dedicated robotic, hybrid, and traditional operating rooms. The cardiothoracic surgery intensive care and acute care units are on the 13th and 14th floor of this building and are staffed by a large group of in-house advanced practice providers and intensivists. Also, Kimmel Pavilion provides some of the most beautiful views of New York City during morning rounds.
