The Hope Preparatory School stood at this spot from 1929 until it closed in 1938, partly due to the effects of the Depression. The building was then turned into a student residence and named Columbia Cottage. It was removed in 1981 to make way for the Maas Center, which was completed in 1986. The building is a gift of Leonard and Marjorie Maas and sons, and is a main gathering site for campus events and meetings.
