Bingham Hall, named for Robert Hall Bingham in 1929, is a historic building at UNC-Chapel Hill. Bingham, a member of the class of 1857, was an active and enthusiastic alumnus who frequently spoke at campus events. He and his family ran the Bingham School near Hillsborough, one of the state’s better-known private academies. However, the Commission on History, Race, and a Way Forward recommended in an April 2021 resolution that Bingham’s name be removed from honor, citing his promotion of racial Anglo-Saxonism, a white supremacist ideology, and his role in educating generations of white men to celebrate racial violence as a civilizing force.
Bingham Hall is also home to the Martha Nell Hardy Performance Space, and the department has extensive media production and performance studies facilities in the Media Arts Space at 108 East Franklin Street. The Media Arts Space houses state-of-the-art media production equipment, classroom space, and editing suites, as well as Studio 6, where numerous live performances are staged.
