        1. As-Salaam

The As-Salaam art piece is in the Carolina Union.

This piece is a joint gift to the Henry-Copland Permanent Art Collection from the Parent Council, the Division of Student Affairs, and the UNC Muslim Students Association. Members of the MSA executive board selected this piece to "convey a message of respect, outreach, and hospitality" to the University and to "foster dialogue and cooperation among students of all faiths." The Arabic word As-Salaam, meaning "peace," flows downward through the center of the cloth. The word is also part of the greeting As-Salaamu Alaikum, or "peace be upon you." The smaller text is drawn from chapter 10, verse 25 of the Qur'an, which reads: "And Allah invites to the abode of peace and guides whom He pleases into the right path."

Artist Haji Noor Deen Mi Guang Jiang lectures on Arabic calligraphy and is known for his skillful combination of Chinese and Arabic styles of calligraphy.
