The undergraduate class of 2005 had just begun its first year at UNC-Chapel Hill when the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, occurred. Upon graduation, their class gift was a memorial garden honoring the Carolina alumni who were victims of that tragic day. The garden, designed by David Swanson of Chapel Hill's Swanson & Associates PA, features a square cove flanked by twin stone walls, alluding to the Twin Towers, and is surrounded by a landscape of trees, bushes, and flowers. A wooden bench bears a dedication from the class of 2005, and a bronze plaque on the western wall's fore edge lists the names of the lost alumni along with a dedication from Chancellor James Moeser.
