Artist Statement
The idea for the piece Fall of Incas - C. carolinensis d.1918 began as a reaction to the statues on campus. My work explores the representation of animals in culture, and I was particularly drawn to the extinct Carolina Parakeet, a North American parrot once found throughout the South. Specifically, I focused on the last living individual, named Incas, who died in 1918. The last known sighting of the species in the wild occurred around 1910.
