Albert Baldwin Wood was one of the Tulane School of Engineering's most famous alumni and was instrumental in the city's endurance throughout the years. In 1913, he invented the powerful pumps that drain the city of floodwaters. Ironically, he loved being on the water. He bought his wooden sloop Nydia in 1903 and died at its tiller in 1953. He left the boat to Tulane, with the stipulation that his boat be preserved for at least 99 years. Until 2004, the boat was stored in a brick and glass structure adjacent to the LBC. It was then restored and later moved to a Biloxi museum, as it is the only surviving example of the work of lake 19th-century shipbuilder William Johnson, who hails from Biloxi, MS.
