ASUCLA and USAC worked together to have five solar umbrellas with USB ports installed on the Kerckhoff Coffee Patio as a way to increase the use of the outdoor space in 2017. The umbrellas cost $11,155 and hold three charging ports each. Fortunately enough, the Green Initiative Fund(TGIF) paid for the umbrellas. TGIF provides money to student groups working on sustainability projects and for this project the students voted to support the program for $4.80 per quarter. Despite the progress towards renewable energy sources, since the solar panels are not connected to the ASCULA electricity system some students did have a concern that the unused electricity throughout the day will go to waste.
