The sago-palm, or cycads, are native to southern Japan. They are cultivated in Southern California, certain parts of Florida, and of course, New Orleans. The cycads are a group of over 100 species of seed plants and are known from fossils over 200 million years old. Nearly all specimens in New Orleans are seed-producing, and without available pollen cannot produce viable seeds; propagation of new plants is by vegetative means. Different types of palms live on Tulane's campus, including one dating back to 1927 outside of Warren House, some along McAlister, and others behind River & Lake.
