         About

The Intramural and North Athletic fields accommodate intramural sports, club sports, open recreation and various special events, so during summer 2015 of California's peak drought, UCLA replaced 8 acres of grass into 100% American-sourced artificial turf.   This artificial turf technology has advanced significantly for both the "grass" cover and the infill medium. Collectively these work to reduce heat gain, but watering the field can be used as a cooling technique when necessary. This replacement was estimated to save 6.5 Million gallons of water yearly, which is equal to 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools! Not only that, but it increases year round access to the fields due to the fact that turf requires less maintenance. Thus, this project has been marked as being one of UCLA's largest water-wise grass replacement initiatives. As a result, with all the water conservation efforts we have seen a reduction in the campus's water footprint by 7.6% per capita (over 70M gallons) since 2000. But after this, ucla is no longer using artificial turf as a solution.
