About
This is Phase 1 of the 4 Phase goal of ZGF to address the building's energy efficiency and life safety infrastructure with the ultimate goal of providing a flexible laboratory environment in a cost-effective manner that is seismically strong and sustainable. It had originally came to be after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which called for a damage assessment and engineering study that determined this tower needs to be improved to meet current codes and standards. One key element of this building is a woven wire mesh pattern created by Mukwonago, Wis.-based Banker Wire that is used as a railing for the new exterior stair tower. It was installed for safety, aesthetics, and to completing the high-performance, ultra-clear glass curtainwall that creates natural ventilation and saves on energy costs. Lastly, this project was able to proceed with construction while maintaining the functionality of the lower level medical labs.
