           About

Designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners, Covel Dining Hall is a 9,829-square-foot partial renovation project since its last renovation back in 2003. Verdical Group provided their expertise in LEED and CALGreen for this project. Along the lines of operational improvements, this consisted of a reconfiguration of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to help meet the needs of the new dining system. Along the lines of being a green building, it meets these standards with reduced indoor water use by 32.51% and reduced lighting power by 33.59%. Furthermore, the use of daylight sensors, which reduced the reliance of artificial lighting during the day plus all the lights being 100% LED, combine together as great practices to energy efficiency. Not only that, but that it also extended to the dining hall's appliances with 80% ENERGY STAR equipment. The materials used in this renovation, included: ingredient transparency certificates, recycled materials, low Volatile Organic Compounds materials, and Take Back Programs. The sustainable practices don't just end at the renovation, but it continues in the overall practices in the functioning dining hall. Inspired by UCLA campus sustainability initiatives, there is an aim to reduce waste, use locally produced food, and educating students about their food choices through carbon footprint scorecards at each table.
