          The daughter of prominent Raleigh merchant Richard Smith, Mary Ann Smith, who died in 1891, left her estate to the university for a chair in Chemistry and for scholarships for needy students. With funds from this inheritance, the university built Smith dormitory in 1901. It now contains offices and classrooms.
