The building, completed in 1970, is named for Edwin A. Greenlaw, who joined the faculty as an English professor in 1913. He served as graduate school dean from 1920 to 1925, during which time the University became a member of the Association of American Universities, an honor reserved for top research institutions.
The Department of English and Comparative Literature, housed in this building, prides itself on providing the UNC-Chapel Hill community with a vibrant, intellectually engaging space for the study of language and literature. Offering a wide variety of graduate and undergraduate programs, the department celebrated its 225th anniversary in the fall of 2021.
