          Hyde Hall houses the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences that focuses on faculty development and support through interdisciplinary collaboration. The Institute’s mission is to help UNC-Chapel Hill recruit, refresh, develop, and retain a world-class faculty of scholars and teachers, with a particular emphasis on the value of the arts and humanities to both the university and the broader world.

          The building is named for Barbara Rosser Hyde and J.R. (“Pitt”) Hyde. Mr. Hyde, who earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1965, founded a retail auto parts company in 1979 that eventually became AutoZone. His wife, Barbara Hyde, a graduate of the class of 1983, served as executive director of the Arts and Sciences Foundation from 1987 to 1992.

          Hyde Hall rooms are used year-round for faculty development programs and activities offered by the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. All Hyde Hall reservation requests Opens in New Window must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the desired event date.
