The UNC School of Law Institute for Innovation, located at 201A E. Franklin Street, is a working partnership between the UNC School of Law , the Kenan-Flagler Business School, and the Chancellor’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship with twin goals of teaching and service:
- Providing law students hands-on experience with advising aspiring entrepreneurs – initially on the UNC-CH campus, and later in their practice careers – on the basics of entity organization and intellectual property capture.
- Serving active and aspiring entrepreneurs on the campuses of UNC and NCSU and in the wider community, including rural communities of North Carolina.
The Institute encompasses three law clinics. The Start Up NC Clinic is devoted to small businesses and entrepreneurs engaged in for-profit enterprise. The Community Development Law Clinic advises social entrepreneurs who seek to bring about positive social change through tax-exempt non-profit organizations. The Intellectual Property Clinic provides assistance to individuals and small businesses seeking to obtain legal protection for their trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other forms of intellectual property.
