          Steele Building was named after Walter Leak Steele a native of Rockingham, North Carolina, and an 1844 graduate of Carolina. He served in the NC State House from 1846 to 1854 and then in the State Senate from 1852 until 1858. After the US Civil War, he was elected to the U.S. House and served from 1877 to 1881.
