The Great Mall pattern of pavers has mathematical significance. Boora Architects and 2.Ink Studio, in consultation with Eli Brandt ’95 (mathematics), selected a paver pattern generated by a cellular automaton called Conway’s Game of Life. The circle represents a detail from generation 313 of a pattern developed by Hartmut Holzwart “showing Gabriel Nivasch’s slipping-stripe reaction.” The 42’ diameter circle contains 3,220 pavers of the same gray granite; the on/off state of each pixel is achieved with two different surface treatments.
