Synagogues - Smith Hill Tour
Smith Hill was home to four synagogues, most of them established by Jews who came between 1890 and 1920, fleeing pogroms in Eastern Europe, and then the violence of WWI. By 1915, 74 percent of Rhode Island’s Jews called Smith Hill home. Sons of Jacob, the only synagogue still active, is on the edge of closing as its membership dwindles and its remaining members are exploring the possibility of transforming it into a Jewish heritage museum.
